Why it is important to Fast before surgery

It is important to not eat prior to surgery because any food that remains in your stomach during your anaesthetic puts you at risk of a condition called 'aspiration'. Aspiration is when food or fluid that is in the stomach comes out of the stomach and enters the lungs. This greatly damages the lungs and can potentially be life-threatening.

It is usual to fast from foods 6 hours prior to surgery and to have clear fluids up until 2 hours prior to your surgery.
